And the perfect way to satisfy those urges is with garlicky goodness drenched shrimp.  :) Review Source:Īfter kayaking to Mokoli'i island then gallavanting around said island then back, a couple gets a tad bit hungry. I'll actually never go back to Giovanni's now. You honestly won't regret passing up Giovanni's this once. If you're jonseing for North Shore shrimp, don't be afraid to try Fumi's. I have to believe these trucks are pulling in a pretty profit! But, again, that's a different story. They're all expensive if you ask me-especially considering they're selling out of a truck, meaning next to zero overhead. Prices are a bit steep for a plate of 12 shrimp and two scoops of rice, but Fumi's prices are on par with the rest of the shrimp trucks up there. #FUMY SHRIMP TRUCK CRACK#So haul your cooler to your picnic table, crack a cold beer, and use it to wash down some tasty shrimp. Seating has always been plentiful when I've gone, but I've tried to stay away from the lunch rushes of high noon on purpose. Plus, at Fumi's you get a "salad" (a handful of iceberg lettuce with a few drops of Italian dressing-a social gesture at best, but at least it's something else besides the rice). (I've heard that Giovanni's will sell shrimp they bought elsewhere once their farmed stock has run out-is this true?) Those sweeter shrimp just tasted fresher. Fumi's shrimp was actually sweeter than the others. You won't believe it, but when placed side by side like that I COULD taste a difference. In order to facilitate the best comparison I bought a garlic butter shrimp plate at each place. Thus, I went to all three of Giovanni's, Romy's, and Fumi's on the same day. I had some extra time to kill one day, so I drove on up to Kahuku with the goal of seeing whether I'd always gone to Giovanni's because Giovanni's had the best tasting shrimp, or because Giovanni's just advertises more than the others. My favorite tasting shrimp on the North Shore! #FUMY SHRIMP TRUCK PLUS#They do have an ATM right next to the window so that's always a plus if all you've got is your debit card. But, everyone has different preferences so I say give em a try.ĬASH ONLY. We still would choose Blue Water's over Fumi's though. We are glad that we gave this place a try and at least now we know what the shrimp tastes like. So after shrimp truck #2, the BF and I felt disappointed. I didn't feel that it was worth it for the taste. So it's kind of sweet/spicy/garlic/butter shrimp. The 'spicy' aspect of the dish is actually what I think is Mae Ploy sauce. It wasn't bad but it wasn't all that great. The shrimp are a decent size and you can tell that the QUALITY of the shrimp is great along with the fact that it was cooked perfectly! Alas. Also, there was a pineapple slice which was more of a garnish since it was extremely sour and not sweet. Maybe if the pieces were smaller and there was a dressing it would've made more sense. As you can see from the picture, there were 5 pieces of romaine lettuce, fairly large pieces, and there was no dressing or offering of a dressing. The plate comes with two scoops of white rice and a salad. Service was SUPER friendly and efficient! We waited about 10 minutes for the plate and it was hot and fresh. Basically the spicy garlic shrimp is the same thing as the garlic butter shrimp but with spice, so we opted to try that one. We were looking at the menu and the Asian female behind the window stated that the garlic butter shrimp and the spicy garlic shrimp were the 2 most popular. We didn't give them a try though.įumi's has pictures of plates as their menu. I did notice a shave ice hole in the wall off to the side near the restroom as well. There is also a sink with soap and paper towels (always a plus!) as well as a restroom (NOT a port-o-potty). There is ample parking and a TON of seating! MANY picnic benches with a huge tarp above to keep you out of the sun (or rain if applicable). We ended up eating at the Fumi's which is located near Romy's, with the shrimp farm behind. I honestly don't know what the different between the two sites are, or if there is a difference. One is very close to Romy's, and the other is a little further down (if you're heading back to Haleiwa). There are 2 Fumi's shrimp trucks located in Kahuku. Heck, it took an hour to get to this spot, we might as well try TWO shrimp trucks while we're at it! Instead of ordering 2 plates (one for each of us) at the Famous Kahuku Shrimp Wagon, the BF and I shared a plate and then went to Fumi's to share a plate. Moving along our North Shore adventure on the 4th of July.
